The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Win a 30-screening prize package for VIFF

It's Vancouver International Film Festival time once again, and The Tyee has a win-win proposal for you.

Do you love and want to support independent, fact-based journalism? Of course you do.

And do you want to support both local and international film-makers? Ditto.

Well, now two lucky winners can do both.

If you sign up to become a Tyee Builder at the $5/month level (or higher), we'll put your name into a draw for a 30-screening prize package for this year's Vancouver International Film Festival (#VIFF). In fact, we've got two sets. See that? Your odds at winning a $300 film buff extravaganza just increased twofold.

The 30 vouchers in each prize package can be exchanged for tickets to all the VIFF films, except for the gala films. They're transferable, so if you're lucky enough to win, you can bring your friends and family. Or, if your sister is into ballet and you're more interested in politics, you can always split up and meet for dinner afterwards.

Not familiar with the Vancouver International Film Festival?

VIFF is among the five largest film festivals in North America. They screen films from 75 countries on nine screens, with an international line-up that includes the pick of the world's top film fests and many undiscovered gems. You're bound to discover something amazing.

This year, The Tyee is sponsoring the film Jalanan. From Canadian director Daniel Ziv, it is the most successful documentary in Indonesian history. A film about three Jakarta street musicians, it is a story of music, love, prison, politics, sex, corruption, rice fields, globalization and heartache. See the trailer here.

What is the Builder program?

It's like a voluntary subscription program that helps pay for more independent news.

Want the full pitch?

Here you go: In an era where more and more news is going behind paywalls, we believe that news is for the people. But good, fact-driven, credible news isn't free. So, how do we square that circle? That's where you come in. You can bring original, independent reporting to the key conversations we need to have in our democracy. You can do that. You can help bring more facts and deeper analysis to the national conversation. Just by becoming a Tyee Builder.
