Tyee Poll: Do You Support BC's Wolf Cull to Save the Caribou?

As Andrew MacLeod recently reported, the government has said the wolves must be shot in order to give their prey, gravely threatened caribou herds, a chance to recover. Responses from observers have varied (read the full article to absorb them all).

For example, John Bergenske, director of conservation group Wildsight, called the killing "a desperate measure made necessary by habitat loss and degradation."

"It is not a solution; it is an unfortunate and distasteful stopgap measure that may buy time for recovery," he said.

On the other hand, Chris Darimont, a University of Victoria geographer, condemned the act, saying the real problem to address is how industry has altered the landscape in ways that advantage wolves.

"These landscapes are not going to favour caribou again for a very long time," he said, adding the government hasn't done enough to slow development. "The damage that's been done is greater than the ability of caribou to recover, even with aggressive intervention."

So, taking stock of the arguments, what do you think?
