Tyee Poll: High Time for Pot to Be Legalized and Regulated?

As the smoke cleared at the end of another 4/20 celebration, there came the possibility that legalizing pot in Canada may be more than just a pipe dream.

During a speech at a UN special session on drugs on April 20 (how fitting), Health Minister Jane Philpott announced that legislation on legalizing and regulating marijuana will be introduced next spring.

Philpott said she understands Canada's stance on pot is controversial, but that the Liberals believe legalization is the best way to protect youth and enhance public safety.

Vancouver's licensing and regulation of medical pot shops has already proven controversial, but now the nation might be rolling with the city's looser attitudes toward pot use and a market for marijuana.
