The Province newspaper cartoonist who claimed his paper pulled his satirical video under pressure from an advertiser has left the newspaper and issued this video as his parting words.
The video bids a fond and humorous farewell to his colleagues and advocates for Dana Gee to take over operations at the newspaper.
Last year, Murphy, who had been with The Province since 1984, created a video that lampooned an ad by Enbridge, the company behind the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline proposal. According to Murphy, in a statement to the CBC, The Province removed the satirical video under pressure from Enbridge, a significant Province advertiser.
The pipeline company denied the allegations, saying "Enbridge has released a statement saying it did not threaten to pull its ads and that it did not ask for the video to be removed," the CBC reported.
"An Enbridge spokesman did say a conversation took place with Postmedia, but he wouldn't divulge any details about who contacted the newspaper company or what was said other than Postmedia had apologized for the spoof."
It was announced on Dec. 30 that Murphy would be contributing his satirical talents to local video provocateurs, Deep Rogue Ram. Also involved with Deep Rogue Ram is former Tyee writer-in-residence, Kai Nagata.
In his introductory interview with Deep Rogue Ram, Murphy talked about the general trend among Canadian chain newspapers to axe political cartoonists:
"That's a marked diminishing of those respective papers, and -- if you want to retain and build readership -- trying to sell people less for more isn’t, in my opinion, the way to do it."
