Since Aug. 25, members of the Lax Kw'alaams First Nation band near Prince Rupert have maintained a camp on Lelu Island, where Pacific Northwest LNG has proposed a $11.4 billion liquified natural gas terminal. The above video offers scenes from an occupation that has now stretched three months.
Earlier this year, Tyee columnist Ian Gill wrote about the band's unanimous rejection of a $1-billion deal from the Petronas-backed gas company in a non-binding plebiscite. One study called the waters immediately surrounding the proposed project "the Grand Central Station for salmon."
The camp was started by Lax Kw'alaams Hereditary Chief Donald Wesley, though some neighbourhing First Nations leaders have criticized the protest. The federal environmental regulator is expected to issue a ruling on the project next year.
