Tyee Critic’s Choice: Pastoring a shrinking church in First Reformed.
A recent Tyee piece featured The Rankin File, a documentary collage of old footage on Harry Rankin’s campaign for Vancouver mayor in 1986 with new interviews.
We’re treated to the release of more old Metro Vancouver footage this year: the 1958 construction of the Second Narrows Bridge in 16-millimetre. Dominion Bridge Co. had asked draftsman Peter Hall to shoot the footage. But after the bridge collapsed, the company was no longer interested in it.
The bridge was eventually completed and renamed in 1994 as the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing to commemorate the 19 workers who died in the collapse and the four who died during construction.
Years later, George Orr, a North Vancouver journalist and documentarian, read about Hall and the existence of his footage in the news. Orr was compelled to put it together in a film with new interviews.
Stay tuned for our interview with Orr coming up.
The Bridge hits the Vancity Theatre on June 17, with another screening on June 20. Tickets here.
