Frequently Asked Questions

When are The Tyee Master Classes?

They're happening on select Saturdays this October and November. Find a detailed listing of classes and dates here.

I don't want to pay online. Is there another way to register?

Online registration is the easiest and surest way to secure your spot, but if you'd rather register offline, we'll try our best to accommodate other options. Please email Ashley Massmann if this applies to you.

Are the Master Classes open to high school students?

Unfortunately not. The Tyee Master Classes are restricted to those aged 19 and over as refreshments will be served on location.

What skill level of are the Master Classes geared toward?

Our instructors have tried their best to design classes that are relevant for all skill levels -- beginners and professionals alike. In some cases, you'll be sent a survey after registration asking a few questions about your interests and experience. Our instructors will use this information as a guide as they finalize course materials and lesson plans. Any special pre-requisites and materials are noted with each class profile. If you're still unsure, feel free to email us and ask.

Where are the Master Classes held?

At The Tyee! That's right -- the Master Classes are your own backstage pass to our Vancouver newsroom. Registered participants will be sent detailed directions and information on parking and bus access.

What do I need to bring to class?

Master Class participants should bring a notebook and something to write with -- or your laptop computer if you prefer to type.

Food and refreshments will be provided free of cost at all workshops, with options for participants with special dietary concerns.

The Tyee will not be held responsble for lost, stolen or damaged goods belonging to Master Class participants.

Will you store my data or information after the classes?

Tyee staff or Master Class instructors may contact registered participants in advance of and after the workshop for course preparation and feedback purposes only.

The Tyee cares about your privacy. Check out our privacy policy for more information.

Will you be running more Master Classes on different topics?

That's the plan! If you have a suggestion for an instructor or course topic, we’d love to hear about it. Send an email to Meaghan MacDonald with your feedback.

I'm a freelancer. Are the classes tax-deductable?

If you're self-employed, yes! More info here. (Remember to save your receipt when you register!)

Can I get a tax receipt?

Regrettably, no. But you can feel good about the registration fee. All proceeds from the Master Classes will go directly towards funding journalism on The Tyee.

Why is there HST added to the registration fee?

Ask Bill Tieleman. No, we're kidding. According to provincial law, we must charge HST on all products and services sold, including private educational workshops. Sorry.

What if I registered and am unable to attend?

If you for any reason cannot attend a class you are registered for, you must notify The Tyee in writing at least 2 weeks prior to the class date for a full refund minus a 10% administration fee. If registration is cancelled within the two-week period prior to the workshop, refunds and exchanges will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

While we will try our best to compensate fairly in such rare cases, The Tyee is not obligated to refund participants in cases where the class is cancelled or rescheduled for reasons beyond our control.
