Horgan enters NDP leadership race

Juan de Fuca MLA John Horgan has confirmed he's entering the race to replace British Columbia NDP leader Carole James.

Horgan made the announcement at a Jan. 10 evening gathering at a theatre in Langford, a Victoria suburb. Vancouver Island MLAs Maurine Karagianis from Esquimalt-Royal Roads and Scott Fraser from Alberni-Pacific Rim attended the campaign launch.

Horgan, who has served as the NDP's energy critic, is the fourth candidate to enter the race, joining MLAs Nicholas Simons and Harry Lali, as well as cannabis activist Dana Larsen.

The NDP leadership vote will be held April 17, 2011. To be eligible to vote in the contest, people have to be members of the party by Jan. 17.
