The Tyee is a reader-supported publication, meaning that the majority of our funding comes from individuals in our community that want to support high-quality, independent journalism. As a registered journalism organization (RJO), we can offer Canadian donors official tax receipts for their support.

Become a Tyee Builder
The backbone of our newsroom. Tyee Builders provide the predictable funding we need to plan deep-dive investigations and long-term reporting projects.
We have a pay-what-you-want-when-you-want model. You can choose to make a one-time contribution or a recurring monthly or annual contribution at any level you choose. If you have an active recurring contribution, or have given a one-time contribution in the last year, we consider you an active Tyee Builder.
Recurring monthly or annual contributions are especially helpful as they provide predictable funding, which makes it easier to plan ahead and support ongoing staff positions.
In appreciation for your support, Tyee Builders get:
- A charitable tax receipt for any gift of $5 or more. One-time and annual contributions will be issued a tax receipt immediately; monthly contributions will be sent out as a consolidated receipt in January for the previous year’s amount.
- Fun Tyee swag like a pin, notebook, tote bag and mug at different levels of giving (if you want it; you can also opt out!).
- Priority access to in-person gatherings. You’ll get early invitations and free or discounted tickets to our events.
- A quarterly Builders-only newsletter with behind-the-scenes reports from our newsroom.
- Newsletters and a website reading experience with fewer ads and asks for support (when you log in to your account to read our articles).
You choose the amount and you can cancel at any time. Just log in to your user-friendly account to manage your Tyee Builder contribution.
Gifts of stocks and securities
Donating publicly traded securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds) is one of the most tax-efficient ways to support The Tyee.
When you sell a stock that has increased in value, you normally pay tax on 50 per cent of the capital gain. However, if you donate the stock directly to The Tyee, the capital gains tax is eliminated.
You’ll also receive a charitable tax receipt for the full market value of the securities at the time of transfer.
As per our policy, gifts of stocks or securities will immediately be sold for their market value upon receipt, and the proceeds of the sale will be put toward our mission.

Legacy giving: Leave a gift in your will
A charitable bequest is a meaningful way to ensure that The Tyee remains feisty and free for generations to come. After taking care of those closest to you, you can designate a percentage of your remaining estate to be donated to support The Tyee.
You retain full control of your assets during your lifetime and your estate will receive a significant tax offset, easing the burden on your beneficiaries while defending the future of independent media.
We recommend that you seek professional advice from a lawyer or financial adviser when considering making a planned gift.

Donor-advised funds, or DAFs
If you manage your charitable giving through a donor-advised fund (at a community foundation or financial institution), you can easily direct grants to The Tyee. Simply search for us by our legal name or CRA number in your provider’s portal, or provide our information to your adviser.

For our American supporters
If you are a U.S. resident or taxpayer, you can still support The Tyee’s public-interest journalism and receive a U.S. tax deduction.
We partner with the Vancouver Foundation, which maintains a 501(c)(3) equivalent arm. By giving through their Friends of the Vancouver Foundation fund, you can direct your support to The Tyee while meeting IRS requirements for charitable deductions.
