New Superman, new Fantastic Four, new Jurassic Park, new Naked Gun — golly, guess it’s that time of the year again!
All these familiar flicks traipsing through the box office once again got us wondering about summer movies and the place they hold in our lives.
The summer movie can loosely be any movie that came out between the months of July and August since the advent of audio/visual technology.
But it’s also more than that. It’s the movie with the trailer that makes you feel dizzy with expectation, that you can’t wait to catch when it passes through your local theatres again, that you can’t turn off or change channels once it comes on the telly. It’s the one that makes you forget how much you’re sweating in this muggy heat and how much you’re dreading of the approaching September.
Perhaps you first caught it in theatres opening night. Or you distinctly remember when you rented the VHS from Blockbuster, or you streamed it on Netflix. Maybe you own a treasured copy on DVD.
Tyee culture editor is famously obsessed with Steven Spielberg’s Jaws which in the last 50 years has inspired countless directors today and completely transformed the way movies are made and the way we watch the big screen.
As we settle in for the summer and consider some small screen delights from this season, it’s a chance to revisit some summer movie classics as well.
With this in mind, we want to ask:
Do you have a favourite summer movie?
