Should There Be More Regulations on Big Tech?

Revelations that OpenAI knew about concerning activity from the Tumbler Ridge shooter but did not alert law enforcement have renewed calls for regulating technology companies which have an outsized influence on society.

Many tech companies training large language models are already embroiled in copyright lawsuits. Grok, the artificial intelligence on Elon Musk’s X, is notorious for having generated sexualized “deep fakes” of women and children. Conspiracies are also known to spread widely on the site.

U.S. companies dominate the Canadian tech market, and own and control much of Canadian’s data, posing a threat to Canada’s data sovereignty.

Previous attempts at regulation have faced obstacles. Three years on, access to news for Canadians is still banned on Facebook and Instagram since the federal government passed law to make tech giants like Meta and Google pay Canadian news organizations for the content they provide.

With this in mind, we want to ask:

Should there be more regulations on big tech?
