From Memoir to Personal Journalism
Everyone has a story tell.
Learn how to tell it in the most effective way to appeal to a large audience. In this half-day writing workshop with bestselling author Alisa Smith, you will learn to craft a strong narrative scene based on your personal experience.
There will be tips to expand these skills into first-person journalism on any topic. Discover interview techniques as well as the principles of story selection, narrative arc, telling details and conveying character.
In class you will write, workshop, and revise your scene. The completed draft will be submitted at the end of class and then reviewed and returned a week later with helpful comments by Alisa Smith.

Who's it for? This workshop will be useful for both aspiring authors and published writers who would like more art in their craft.
Requirements: Laptop for writing exercises if you don't wish to write by hand.
Alisa Smith has been a professional freelance writer for many years, with credits ranging from Adbusters to Reader's Digest. She has won a National Magazine Award and was a director for the Western Magazine Awards board. Her bestselling book The 100-Mile Diet received numerous literary prizes and was named a Chapters/Indigo Book of the Decade. She has worked as an editor at Vancouver magazine and lectured widely on writing at Canadian and American universities.
