The Hook: Political news, freshly caught

Handful of BC cities set to be 'occupied' on Saturday

From Nanaimo to Nelson, protests in a number of B.C. cities are set to begin Saturday, Oct. 15, as part of a growing movement against wealth inequality and economic instability.

The 'leaderless' Occupy Wall Street protests, which began Sept. 17 in New York City, are expected to spread worldwide this weekend. According to the CBC, some 1,500 cities globally will be participating in Saturday's day of action.

Occupations starting Saturday are planned for the following B.C. cities:

Occupy Vancouver: Vancouver Art Gallery, 10 a.m.

Occupy Victoria: Legislature front lawn, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Occupy Nelson: City Hall, march begins at 1 p.m.

Occupy Kelowna: Kerry Park, 10 a.m.

Occupy Nanaimo: Diana Krall Plaza, 11 a.m.

Vancouver-based Adbusters Magazine founder and editor Kalle Lasn, credited as a founder of #OccupyWallStreet, described Saturday's planned events as "another big moment."

"We are sort of strategically trying to up the level and see if we can't pull off something even crazier than Occupy Wall Street, whether we can pull off a sort of global Tahrir moment," Lasn said in a recent Tyee interview.
