OneBC’s Dallas Brodie Sues Fired Staffer over Online Posts

OneBC Leader Dallas Brodie has filed a lawsuit accusing fired party staff person Othman Mekhloufi of defaming her in social media posts.

“Beginning or about February of 2026 and continuing to the present, Mekhloufi engaged in a sustained campaign of online defamation directed at Brodie,” says the notice of claim filed Monday in the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Mekhloufi’s statements, it says, “have caused and continue to cause injury, loss and damage to the plaintiff, and were deliberately calculated by the defendant to expose the plaintiff to contempt, ridicule and hatred, and to cause other persons to shun or avoid the plaintiff, and to lower the plaintiff’s reputation in the eyes of right thinking members of the community, all of which has in fact occurred.”

Mekhloufi hasn’t filed a response to the lawsuit and none of Brodie’s claims have been tested or proven in court.

“Ms. Brodie is spiralling, suing people for calling her crazy on the internet,” Mekhloufi said in an email responding to questions from The Tyee. “I’m sympathetic to her situation and I hope she receives the help she needs.”

The lawyer acting for Brodie, Daniel Reid with the firm Harper Grey, declined to comment on Mekhloufi’s response.

“MLA Brodie intends to deal with this matter in the courts, and looks forward to doing so,” he said. “As this matter is now the subject of litigation, neither our office nor MLA Brodie will be making further comment at this time.”

Brodie was first elected in October 2024 to represent Vancouver-Quilchena in the B.C. legislature as a Conservative.

She was removed from the Conservative caucus less than five months after the election by then-leader John Rustad. He explained Brodie’s removal was “a result of her decision to publicly mock and belittle testimony from former residential school students, including by mimicking individuals recounting stories of abuses — including child sex abuse.”

After parting with the Conservatives, Brodie formed OneBC with Tara Armstrong, the MLA for Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream, but the pair soon fell out over the caucus’s employment of Mekhloufi.

According to Brodie’s court filing, “Mekhloufi was fired as a staffer for OneBC in December of 2025 as a result of online postings he authored which expressed Neo-Nazi, white-nationalist and antisemitic content.”

In a separate lawsuit stemming from that time and filed in the B.C. Supreme Court earlier in the summer, Brodie’s former chief of staff Tim Thielmann is suing her for wrongful dismissal.

Thielmann, who supported keeping Mekhloufi on staff, The Tyee reported, was fired on Dec. 12. His court filing says he was given no reason for his dismissal and that Brodie has “publicly associated the Plaintiff’s dismissal with her purported opposition to ‘neo-Nazi’ and ‘antisemitic’ ideologies.”

Mekhloufi continues to work with Armstrong.

Brodie’s lawsuit against Mekhloufi quotes seven of Mekhloufi’s posts on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, where his posts are public and he has more than 6,000 followers. It says he made similar statements in other online posts, emails, text messages, conversations and social media messages.

In each case, it says, the statements Mekhloufi made were “false, malicious and defamatory” of Brodie.

They include an April 23 post on X that said Brodie “drunkenly assaulted a fellow MLA in a public restaurant.”

The statement would cause an ordinary person to believe Brodie is violent, engaged in criminal conduct and is an alcoholic, the lawsuit says.

An April 29 Mekhloufi post said: “If you’re wondering why we never let Dallas film an unscripted video on her own back when OneBC’s leadership had an average IQ north of 105, here’s why: Dallas Brodie was fired from Caucus because she’s unstable and frequently abuses everyone around her. She was fired as OneBC Leader for the same reason. Her residential school comments were irrelevant. This is a person you want nowhere near government.”

The claim says it was false, malicious and defamatory to say that Brodie is stupid, unstable, abusive and incompetent and should not be involved in government.

A May 27 post said: “My tenure at OneBC ended when the party Board fired Dallas Brodie after months of her erratic behaviour, which was precipitated by a major crash out where she fired the Chief of Staff, Executive Director and myself from Caucus staff in December of 2025 after her ego was bruised. The Board fired her as party leader after she went ballistic.”

That post gave the impression that Brodie is mentally ill, capricious and unstable, the lawsuit says. It said she behaves erratically, was motivated to fire Mekhloufi because of her bruised ego and “behaved so erratically and unstably that she was terminated.”

A July 17 post asked: “Does Western Charter House work with OneBC? Does it condone Dallas Brodie amplifying narratives from the same organization that murdered Charlie Kirk?”

Western Charter House is a non-partisan advocacy organization. Charlie Kirk was a right-wing political activist who was shot and killed last year during an outdoor debate on the campus of Utah Valley University.

Mekhloufi’s post said Brodie supports the person who murdered Kirk, the lawsuit says. It gives the impression she supports political violence and that Western Charter House should distance itself from her, it says.

A July 18 post quoted in the claim said: “Kooky Dallas Brodie is a disgusting liar. She believes in nothing except stroking her own ego, and she has repeatedly backstabbed conservatives by calling them Nazis over personal grievances.... Dallas Brodie must resign. We need fewer crazies in the Legislature.”

The post gives the impression that Brodie is an egomaniac, suffers from mental illness and “should be viewed with scorn and contempt,” the claim says.

An Aug. 9 post, the suit says, was referring to Brodie when it said, “Mentally ill people shouldn’t be members of caucus.”

And an Aug. 16 post said: “Dallas Brodie said the man who threatened to rape Pierre Poilievre’s wife is ‘brave’ and wants to meet with him. This deranged woman belongs nowhere near Conservative politics.”

Besides saying that Brodie is deranged and suggesting she is mentally ill, the post portrayed her as supporting rape, the claim says.

According to the lawsuit, Brodie wrote to Mekhloufi on July 8 demanding that he remove the posts she believed were defamatory and refrain from defaming her in future. She also wanted an apology.

“Despite a demand to do so, the defendant has refused to provide an apology for publication of the Defamatory Statements or Additional Defamatory Statements and has continued to publish statements which defame the plaintiff,” it says.

As a result of Mekhloufi’s statements, which he knew or ought to have known were false, Brodie has “suffered injury to her character, credit and reputation” as well as damages, the lawsuit says. The statements were “made maliciously with the intent of damaging the reputation of the plaintiff and interfering with her relationships with [the] public,” it adds.

The alleged damages include “substantial and persisting injury to the professional reputation of the plaintiff; injury to pride and self-confidence of the plaintiff; social damage to the plaintiff; and injury to the professional and personal relationships between the plaintiff and other persons, corporations and organizations.”

Mekhloufi “made no effort to ascertain the truth of the allegations” made in the statements and was trying to harm Brodie’s political career, the claim says. “The defendant was motivated by express malice, including anger at the plaintiff for his termination as a staff member of OneBC.”

Brodie is seeking damages and an injunction that would prevent Mekhloufi “from continuing to publish defamatory statements concerning the plaintiff and further defaming the plaintiff.”

Mekhloufi has 21 days from when he receives the notice of claim to file his response.
